The 4 foundations of health and fitness

Excuse the building metaphor.

If you want to create anything of value you have to start with a solid foundation.  Health and fitness, like a building, needs a strong foundation which is reinforced and built up over time.  With consistent care and maintenance there is no reason why health and fitness can't last a lifetime.

The 4 foundations of health and fitness.

For a foundation to be strong it has to be in balance.  If one part of the foundation is weak, it weakens the whole system and either the weakness is corrected, or the whole foundation drops to the level of the weakest link.  Conversely, if the foundation is balanced and strong then there is a platform for maximizing and even leveraging performance.

#1 - Move more.

Our bodies were made to move, so move more to:

  • Build functional strength and muscular endurance
  • Increase cardiovascular endurance
  • Develop balance and flexibility
  • Sustain a proud posture and a strong core

#2 - Eat responsibly.

Food is fuel for your body, so understand and respect what you consume.  When we eat responsibly, food:

  • Energizes our bodies
  • Maximizes both physical, mental and emotional performance
  • Is a medicine that can heal and repair
  • Is delicious and satisfying!

#3 - Drink more water.

About 60% of an adult human body is water and our brains, hearts and lungs are made up of an even greater percentage.  Drinking more water ensures that the body and its vital organs can perform at their peak.  If food is our fuel then think of water as the lubricant, transporting vital nutrients around the body and flushing out unwanted toxins.  

#4 - Wake up refreshed.

Sleep is a vital factor in rest and recovery.  When we wake up refreshed we know that we are getting enough consistent restful sleep.  When our bodies are in this state sleep is extremely effective in repairing and restoring our physical, mental and emotional beings.
